THE ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR THE SONIC REVOLUTION:
I appreciate your email. Currently we are in the studio preparing our
next album. Electronic Warfare ver 2.o (this is top secret). I will ask
our label manager (Cornelius Harris) to assist you in keeping a Detroit
presence in Germany and to assist you in regards to Buzz and his actions
within Germany. As I am "concerned"
It appears that the media & associated German labels would prefer if
Detroit was "dead" and out of the way? I've talked to Jeff Mills about
this and he agrees. There seems to be the ugly presence of "racism"
entering the music. Whereas the contributions and pioneering efforts of
many Detroit/Chicago electronic artists are being pushed aside for the
Ritchie Hawtin styled?? Minimalism. Keep in mind me & Ritchie are cool
and I have nothing against him......................but he seems to have
unknowingly given German minimalism the look & style that the true
German minimalists "Basic Channel" out of respect to the music refused
to do. Thus allowing the German media to "claim" something. Just the
same as the British press "claimed" Drum & Bass music. Once something is
defined, named & "Claimed" it can easily be exploited by any aware
businessman. This is the exact reason UR is so fuckin independant and
our music so unexplained.
Also I could have sworn "Robert Hood" pioneered this form and all
those who do that form of music owe a lot to Rob. And in turn they owe a
lot of UR, Axis & Tresor for developing Rob (X101/X102). This disrespect
or forgetting has extended all the way here to Detroit! As this years
festival after years of attempts to wrestle it away from its originators
has finally gone out of the hands of the people who created it. A very,
very sad day. Not many Detroit guys are playing and many, many Europeans
& west coast guys are coming to play. I will forward you the current
lineup.
So this fight for the survival of Detroit Electronic Music is on as it
has been for the last 12 years IMO. Not only on a Global level but also
here at home on a local level also. And although the German Minimal
Labels and their bought & paid for magazines that support them maybe
tired of Detroit. We have received many, many, orders and emails from
the real people in Germany who just simply love good music regardless of
where it comes from. This isn't just a German problem for us but again a
Global one. It could be the result of the "fact" that Detroit never
promoted itself enough (not individually but as a
sound)...................................as we all scampered to produce
the "hottest" track yet neglected the obvious "promo opportunities" the
music offered. Chalk that up to being young w/no guidance? Young w/no
money, Selfish?? Or lazy?? (Ahhh lets let Europe promote us??). It was
only a matter of time before someone exploited that opportunity (Plus 8/
Ghostly) either way we are now engaged in an uphill battle for a fight
that was inevitably coming. As it is common practice to push black
people out of any particular form of music that they invent or pioneer
(Rock, Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass??).
Anyway You would think in a country like Germany that had so much
trouble with Propaganda in the past. That the young people would be
aware of when they are being programmed!! But yet again the programmers
being fueled by money from sales are smart and present a great package
to the unknowing. How quickly people forget.........................I
remember me & Jeff coming to Germany in the early 90's and schooling
muggs on the possibilities of electronic music. Now it seems some hate
to remember these moments? I remember many, many, many east german kids
in Tresor thanking us for playing music that "set them free" I remember
all this. In fact I remember playing in Tresor one night and 2 very
familiar faces were in the crowd watching us...................it was
Florian and Ralph Hutter of Kraftwerk. It seemed that only me, Jeff &
Dimitri actually knew who they were!! We were amazed (me & Jeff) that
none of the people recognized them........................amazing. On
another note I also realize that every 5 years people basically forget
old faces, groups and producers anyway!! So it is important for the
labels and producers and artists to stay active and consistently make
good records and dj at small clubs who have always supported them. Dj's
get these ridiculous agents who don't know who or what clubs originally
supported the dj's. Then they start charging too much and only playing
for rich clubs who had no clue who they were in the beginnings of their
careers (Dj Rolando). Unfortunately this is a common situation and we
often lose many good artists, dj's & producers too the better life and
money opportunities in Europe. Fortunately Detroit is so fucked up there
are always good dj's willing to have a gig anywhere for beer & pizza and
a good time. So thru them the underground lives
but.....................it changes. As the older veteran dj guys become
content w/their safe jet set dj lives and never come
home.........................the younger ones change the sound here at
home. In that way our sound evolves constantly.
Anyway man I write you this email in strict secrecy. I would very much
like to grow the electro/slide sound into Germany. To do this we must
stray away from the traditional clubs & stores that promote & sell
electronic music in Germany. We have had great success in Japan using
this method and many new dj's and artists are getting a chance thru
UR/Submerge/UG to express their "New" sound on the world we will also
soon try this with Uwe in France. Kids from poorer areas of East & West
germany must be involved. Not the rich kids who can participate in the
"fashion show" of current German minimalism. Dj's in topless clubs,
strange sex clubs (ie; Goth, Fetish, etc) must be involved. Also cutting
edge avant garde' fashion shows and their promoters should be utilized.
As all these people tend to be the underdogs of the society. As well as
skateboard and breakdance kids.
Well packaged Bootlegg music CD's full of music unavailable at all but
one select shop should be done. As well as like minded licensing
partners established (Uwe in France, UG in Japan). Struggling magazines,
web blogs, college radio, internet radio and pirate radio and aspiring
journalists (not established ones) should also be approached. Small used
clothing stores that attract a lot of progressive people can be turned
into small record shops by selling mix tapes (done by you, Buzz,
Digital, etc)
Stickers, shirts, etc will have to be done also. Overall it is a method
to retaking your country from a definite programmer domination that is
happening now. But it takes a lot of work. I will put Cornelius in
contact with you to get this mission in motion. In the meantime have a
good Easter. And remember poor kids, and society's rejects are the
strength of the underground of any country! As they are more progressive
out of need. Have faith that by the time rich people get a hold of any
music.......................that particular music is truly in great risk
of DEATH. So in that instance..............that style of Detroit may
well be gone?? I think it will always be in the hearts of "Those who
know" but now we must deal with the reality of "Those who don't know"
hopefully those who know and those who don't know will come together
thru UR and a yet unfound sound??
We are making a new sound here....................Slide. Its a
combination of Electro & Hip Hop and kids here in the skating rinks love
it!! It also has acid elements in it for the Old Skool Heads!!! So here
we go again....................Detroit nevers
dies........................it just adjusts and survives man. So never
become discouraged.............................just look to your
strength and often it requires you making painfull adjustments and
leaving something you love to stay progressive and in front.
It was very painfull for me & Jeff to abandoned the hard acid sound of
our "Acid Rain" series. But after hearing so many here in the midwest
copying the sound we knew it wouldn't last long...............so we
moved on and for good reason (all those who copied us are gone). This
also explains Jeff's mysterious "what will happen in 50 years" record on
his tomorrow label as so many imitated his sound. In the latest movie of
star wars Master Yoda tells a trouble young Darth Vader "you must
sometimes leave things you love in order to keep your focus"
Dan ........................Germany needs something new! Something
exciting! Slide may be it.......................or the beginning of it I
don't know but its worth a try. It cannot be established in the
traditional magazines, shops and clubs that are used now. Because
against all our teachings of the ever expanding sound possibilities of
electronic music. They have become narrow minded, closed to the future
and now dependant on the money generated by "Traditional Techno" ????
Techno represents our future as the human race. Every new person born
represents a new possibilitie in sound expression. So if one cannot keep
moving forward then surely he can't participate in the future. Lets make
an effort for the future. This is truly what Detroit Techno is all
about! As this was the inspiration from our Master Teachers. The
Electrifying Mojo, Kraftwerk and George Clinton.
